Reframe Your Understanding of Āsana

“The Viniyoga perspective of Āsana is a revisioning of the way we think about practice.” —Gary Kraftsow

Gary created Āsana Unlocked: Reframe Your Understanding, Renew Your Practice, Refresh Your Teaching to give you an in-depth understanding of the role of āsana in the integrative practice of Viniyoga.

This course is for students and teachers of all levels who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of āsana. Practitioners will learn to use āsana as a means to better understand their bodies and begin to transform their lives and practices. Teachers can further their understanding of what is happening in their students’ bodies, and learn how to use adaptation in āsana to empower their students toward transformation.

The teachings Gary offers view āsana as a tool and a process, not a goal to be achieved. He covers:

  • Function vs. form
  • The importance of the breath
  • Basic biomechanical principles
  • Patterns of movement, repetition, and stay
  • Adaptation of form and breath to meet individual needs
  • The art and science of sequencing āsana as part of an integrated practice that may also include prāṇāyāma, meditation, chanting and/or mantra.

Get five full-length practices plus some short demonstrations, and learn:

  • About the lineage and application of Viniyoga.
  • The fundamental principles that make a Viniyoga āsana practice different than other styles of yoga.
  • The vital relationship between the breath and the spine.
  • Foundational biomechanical concepts in relation to traditional yoga postures.
  • How to adapt the same postures in different ways to produce different functional effects.
  • How to view āsana as a tool for neuromuscular re-education.
  • The art and science of sequencing āsana as part of an integrated practice that may also include prāṇāyāma, meditation, chanting and/or mantra.
  • The truly integrated practice of Viniyoga, which doesn’t look at poses in isolation, but weaves together āsana, prāṇāyāma, chanting, and meditation.

What Viniyoga Students Are Saying

“I was drawn to Gary’s teaching because of his scholarly knowledge, wisdom, and clarity in all aspects of yoga, particularly in the Viniyoga tradition. His precision in teaching this deeply beneficial and therapeutic breath-centric practice has transformed my personal practice. It's purposeful, strengthens key musculature, and encourages a healthy range of motion through conscious movement. I also see profound positive changes in my students directly from doing these practices, more so than any other I’ve witnessed over the last 30 years.”

“For me, Gary’s greatest gift is his teaching—the appropriate adaptation of our breath deepens our physical, mental, and spiritual experience. He transmits fundamentals that we take with us into the rest of our lives. Gary is also an academic and his teaching is rich in information. His āsana sequences are exquisitely and efficiently designed to deliver an intention and modified for the individual's condition.”
