Course Overview

Many people are attracted to yoga to increase flexibility, but what about mobility?

Mobility is the ability to move through ranges of motion with control (core strength, balance, and coordination) without restriction, whereas flexibility involves muscular passivity (it does not require strength and it’s effortless). Shifting your practice focus from flexibility to mobility can lead to a more sustainable and stable practice.

In this empowering program, you’ll get one complete practice that features complex movements designed to increase strength gains on the mat. Treat this as an experiment, only going as far into the poses and movements as feels good to you, and know that with consistent practice, your mobility will increase over time.

This program is broken down into three modules:

  1. “The Relationship Between Mobility and Flexibility” (which further unpacks the difference between flexibility and mobility)

  2. “Practical Tips Before You Practice” (where Jim breaks down the complex movements ahead of time, preparing you for the practice that’s to come)

  3. “A Yoga Practice for Mobility” (where you’ll dive into your practice!)

Enjoy.

Section 1
  • What is mobility? The terms flexibility and mobility are often used interchangeably, but in fact they refer to two different things. Here, Jim unpacks that difference by fully describing each. He also provides a few key points that are essential for the upcoming practice session (in module three).
Section 2
  • In this module, you’ll explore some of the complex movements you’ll do in the practice session: one-legged pistol squat, “flipping the dog” (going from downward dog to upward bow), and a “wall crawl” (a variation of handstand). Only go as far into the poses and movements as feels good for you, and know that over time—with practice—your mobility will continue to increase.
Section 3
  • Ready to practice? Dive into this breath-focused functional mobility sequence, which features the complex movements you explored in the last module along with many other variations of classic poses (including plank, side plank, and revolved triangle). While challenging at times, this experience is punctuated by moments of rest, silence, and integration throughout. Once the active work is over, you’ll take a seat and integrate the effects of practice further with nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing).
