Yoga teacher and college professor Colin Hall brings you five short sessions that form a sampler of meditation practices. He begins each one with a brief discussion of some of the assumptions that people make about meditation (who practices it, what it requires, what it’s used for, and what its benefits are) and then guides you through a practice so you can experience its effects on your state of mind.

These uniquely fun and serious sessions are a straightforward way to check out meditation—feel free to do them at your pace and to return to them as often as you like.

  • Colin introduces you to the program and to the practices you’ll be trying out.
  • Meditation requires effort. Learn about the kind of effort it requires with a simple “cat and mouse” meditation, where you’ll learn about how mental awareness works and how it can help you improve your focus in daily life.
  • Because meditation is often associated with relaxation, it is sometimes misunderstood as just an opportunity to chill out, do nothing. But meditation can actually involve work—find out what kind in this short practice.
  • Have you ever felt that meditation is being used to make people more compliant in the corporate world? While that’s a valid point of discussion, there are also many altruistic reasons to meditate. In this session, you’ll do a “pro-social” loving-kindness practice that reveals meditation’s larger purpose as it evokes empathy and compassion. You might even come away with a different feeling toward people you dislike!
  • The benefits of meditation may be overhyped sometimes, but that doesn’t mean it has nothing helpful to offer us. In this session, you’ll experience a sensory meditation that’s designed to leave you feeling pleasantly relaxed and aware.
