Course Overview

This five-day pranayama program is great for anyone with a basic knowledge of breathwork who is seeking to deepen their practice. It progressively builds to pratiloma pranayama, a breathing practice where you alternate between ujjayi (victory breath) and nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing).

The program begins with a review of kapalabhati (skull shining breath), ujjayi, and nadi shodhana pranayama. Each class begins with an explanation of the practices you’ll do that day and their energetic effects (brahmana and langhana) and is followed by a practice.

Section 1
  • On day one of this program, you’ll learn how to do kapalabhati and ujjayi pranayama. You’ll also learn what the terms brahmana and langhana mean and how ratios are used in pranayama practice. After that, Jim guides you through a practice using all of the concepts and techniques covered in this first class.
  • On day two, after a review of the topics covered on day one, you’ll learn how to refine the breathing techniques you’ve learned so far. After that, you’ll do a complete pranayama practice that features nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) using the langhana (calming) effect.
  • In this practice, you’ll explore the brahmana (energizing) effect, jalandhara bandha (chin lock), and antara kumbhaka (breath retention). Jim also gives you tips about how to work with breath retentions if they make you uncomfortable for any reason. You’ll do a complete nadi shodhana practice, and as before, you’ll sit quietly afterward to observe the effects of this particular pranayama.
  • On day four, you’ll combine the techniques you learned on day two and day three as you begin to explore pratiloma (a pranayama where you alternate between ujjayi and nadi shodhana). You’ll also do a pratiloma practice with and without Jim guiding you.
  • On the final day of this program, you’ll practice pratiloma pranayama, adding breath retentions to the experience. Jim will guide you at first and then let you practice on your own. Enjoy this sweet and refreshing breath practice!
