Challenge Overview

Welcome to Exploring the Yamas. The Yamas constitute the first limb of yoga as outlined by The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These ethical principles and moral disciplines are designed to guide practitioners toward right conduct and harmonious living.

The five Yamas include ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (moderation), and aparigraha (non-attachment).

Over the course of this challenge, Lauren Lewis will lead you through a series of five 20-minute vinyasa sessions designed to help you embody and integrate these profound yogic philosophies into your practice and life. Whether experienced individually or sequentially, each session can be deeply impactful on and off the mat.

Section 1
  • Welcome to Exploring the Yamas. In this challenge, you’ll delve into the foundational aspects of the yamas as outlined in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These guiding ethical principles offer a roadmap for practitioners seeking alignment with right conduct and harmonious living. Led by Lauren Lewis, this challenge is a journey through the five yamas: ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (moderation), and aparigraha (non-attachment). Through a series of five 20-minute vinyasa sessions, you’ll explore how to embody and integrate these profound yogic philosophies...
Section 2
  • Embody the wisdom of ahimsa, or "non-violence" through a gentle sequence of postures to open the front and back of your heart. In this practice, you'll explore the transformative healing of practicing kindness towards yourself and how that ripples outwards into all of your interactions.
Section 3
  • Embody the wisdom of satya, or “truthfulness”, through a sequence of front-body stretches that target the heart and throat. In this session, you’ll explore practicing authenticity coupled with compassion to cultivate truthfulness on and off the mat.
Section 4
  • Embody the wisdom of asteya, or “non-stealing”, through a gentle flowing practice that fosters a deeper understanding of giving and receiving. You’ll investigate how you exchange energy, time, and resources, ultimately recognizing that who you are and what you have, is enough.
Section 5
  • Embody the wisdom of brahmacharya, or “moderation” through a flow of standing poses, balancing postures and a short meditation. In this practice, you’ll explore the transformative power of savoring what you have and releasing excessive consumption by staying attuned to the subtle sensations that arise in the present moment.
Section 6
  • Embody the wisdom of aparigraha, or "non-attachment" through a flow of twisting postures including thread the needle, revolved crested lunge, and seated twist. In this practice, you'll explore the transformative power of releasing attachments and creating more space for the unchanging aspects of your deepest self.
