Course Overview

Tapas is a form of self-discipline outlined in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali.

It can be translated as "to heat" or "to burn," requires great effort, moves us out of our comfort zone, and ultimately helps us find greater steadiness, courage, and emotional equilibrium in daily life.

This challenge will empower you with three practices that will test your limits in unique ways:

1. an energizing sun salutation exploration that involves a lot of repetition 2. a long hold sequence that will encourage you to be still 3. and a pranayama practice that will help you lessen inner noise and create clarity of mind

Sign up today and get one practice a week for three weeks, delivered directly to your inbox. Once you've done all three separately, try putting them all together as a full practice. Ready to begin?

Section 1
  • Welcome

    1m7s
  • There are a number of ways to incorporate tapas into your life. One way is to repeat one particular practice many times. This class will focus on sun salutations as a form of tapas. You'll build heat as you flow with intention and with a deep focus on the breath. Grab a mat and begin this first exploration of tapas.
Section 2
  • Holding postures is a fantastic way to build tapas. Long holds can help us build a sense of stability that transfers into our everyday lives so that we can remain steady and unshaken during chaotic times. This 20-minute class features long holds in downward dog, plank pose, a variation of locust pose, half lord of the fishes, and more. Find your sthira (steadiness) through stillness.
Section 3
  • Learn how to build tapas with pranayama (breathwork). This practice includes a gentle warm-up before a seated practice of kapalabhati (skull shining breath), pratiloma, which is a mixture of ujjayi (victory breath) and nadi shodhanam (alternate nostril breathing). This practice does involve breath retention, which may at first make the mind agitated. But with practice, it can create a clarity of mind that can provide an inner sense of ease, even in chaotic times. Progress slowly, with patience.
