Course Overview

When we think of self-care practices, bubble baths, journaling, and long walks might come to mind. But these gestures, while useful, may only provide temporary relief if we aren’t also learning to be more compassionate to ourselves.

In this practice-based program, which blends Buddhist and yogic wisdom, Cyndi Lee will teach you how to develop this self-compassion so that eventually your own caring heart becomes your ultimate self-care resource.

This course is broken down into nine short modules. Along the way, Cyndi will help you build your motivation for self-caring, guide you through a loving-kindness meditation, lead you in a non-goal-oriented restorative class, and more.

Section 1
  • What does it mean to care for ourselves? Perhaps it’s bigger than anything external we might try (such as journaling or getting more rest)—perhaps it’s about shifting the relationship we have with ourselves. In this module, Cyndi shares how developing more self-compassion is a catalyst for this inner shift. She also outlines what’s to come in this program and how you’ll benefit from it.
Section 2
  • When we practice self-caring, we want to be clear about what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how we’re doing it. This starts with motivation. In this module, Cyndi shares how finding this motivation for practice begins with the act of “tending and befriending” ourselves.
Section 3
  • In this module, Cyndi shares a short journaling practice that can help you continue to build your motivation for practice. Have a timer, a pen or pencil, and paper available.
Section 4
  • In this module, you’ll explore a grounding pranayama practice. It begins with a guided visualization, where you’ll inhale to “gather the threads of your awareness” and exhale to “ground into your seat.” After that you’ll move on to counting your breath, transition into sama vritti (equal part breathing), and close with nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing). Enjoy getting better acquainted with the link between your mind and breath, and as Cyndi puts it, “giving something wonderful to yourself.”
Section 5
  • In this module, Cyndi teaches you how to give yourself a foot massage. Enjoy giving some love to your feet…for the benefit of all beings!
Section 6
  • We often think of savasana as something we do to close class, but practicing savasana on its own can be very healing. In this module, you’ll explore two prop-supported variations of this classic pose that you can do on your mat or in your bed. Have a couple of blankets, eye pillows (or rolled-up socks), blocks, and a few pillows (or bolsters) available.
Section 7
  • In this module, Cyndi invites you to drop into a non-goal-oriented practice where you’ll rest in restorative poses and enjoy extended moments of silence. This practice includes legs up the wall pose, a bound angle pose variation, a figure four variation, a seated forward fold, easy twist, downward facing dog, and a restorative upper-back-focused backbend. You’ll do all of these poses at the wall, then close in a simple seat, with hands to heart, to quietly absorb the effects of your practice and make a closing dedication. May all beings be happy and free…including yourself!
Section 8
  • Ready for your first practice? The Dalai Lama once said, “Everyone I meet is my friend.” While seeing everyone as a friend might be a stretch for many of us, it’s a possibility we can play with. In this module, you’ll learn a loving-kindness (or “unconditional friendliness”) meditation, which is a foundational practice for developing more compassion. In this practice, you’ll extend your compassion to others, but begin by extending it toward yourself.
Section 9
  • In this module, Cyndi shares the value of wrapping up any practice with a dedication for all beings. She then shares a dedication you can use, which is a translation of the brahmavihara—a reminder of the brahmavihara is that “all beings” includes yourself.
