Easy DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner

Share:

Don’t want to pay $15 for a seven-pack of yoga mat wipes (aka glorified baby wipes)? Still waiting for your anti-microbial, bacteria-resistant, self-cleaning cork mat to arrive in the mail? Enter our favorite DIY, three-ingredient (okay, four including the bottle) mat spray.

Items you’ll need:

  • Tea tree oil (this oil has natural anti-bacterial properties; in other words, this is the ingredient that's doing the cleaning!)

  • A variety of essential oils (yogi’s choice! But if you're looking for suggestions, we like lavender, peppermint, citronella, or wild orange)

  • A spray bottle

  • Water

Step one: Fill the spray bottle most of the way with water—leaving a bit of room for the oils. (If you’re of the, erm, more pungent variety of yogi, use less water for a more powerful cleanser.)

Experiment with different scents and blends until you find one that you love.

Step two: Add 1-2 drops of the germ-fighting tea tree oil. Now rock on with your bad self! Drop in those other oils. Energize your next practice with refreshing peppermint. Quiet and still the mind with lavender. Ward off any persistent microbes with cleansing citronella. Bring a smile to your face (and those around you!) with fresh, sweet, wild orange. Experiment with different scents and blends until you find one that you love.

Then, shake it all up, spray your mat down generously, wipe dry with a cloth, and allow the mat to completely air-dry. You can use this awesome spray beyond your mat too; keep it on hand to wipe down mat bags, gym shoes, gym equipment...the list goes on!
